The Importance Of Good Communication

The importance of good communication

We read or hear often enough how important it is to maintain good communication, whether at work, with your family or in your love life. However, is everything that goes along with the communication process completely clear to you?

We cannot always find the right words, the right way to make ourselves understood or to convey exactly what we want to convey. Moreover, it is often difficult to convert our thoughts or feelings into words. This is often a big challenge for us. We often even tend to think that the problem is not with us, but with the person we are having a conversation with, because this person creates a barrier that prevents our message from getting through.

We are not aware of all the factors that are part of our communication process. We forget the importance of communicating with others in a clear and simple way  and neglect to think about the impact that our words and gestures can have. We make assumptions, take things for granted, make statements about certain events or people, search too much behind everything, we slander, add or omit things, etc. But how is our communication actually?

With language we create realities

We are all like sculptors who are constantly creating and destroying the information that comes from or comes to us, based on our characteristics, experiences and idiosyncrasies. However, we must remember that as humans we create realities through language.

When someone tries to convey an image, feeling, concept or idea, it is unlikely that the listener will perceive this message in exactly the same way. Have you ever thought about this? The reason why misunderstandings often arise is that people think they are talking about the same thing, when in fact they both perceive the conversation in completely different ways.

Couples who talk about love, but both have different ideas about it. People who are friends with each other, while both identify this friendship with different traits. During a conversation or argument with someone else, have you ever considered that maybe you both just have different ideas or opinions about what you’re talking about?

During a conversation with someone else, the words may be the same, while the content of these words is completely different. We must therefore consider what we say and how we say it to get a clearer picture of our communication with others.

The video below can give you an idea of the importance of good communication through a funny love story.

Ask instead of accept

When we’re having a conversation with someone, it’s actually important to ask right from the start what you’re talking about and what this means for that person.

What does love mean to you? How do you see a love relationship? What does being faithful or boring mean to you? What does happiness or sadness mean to you? At the same time, we can also explain how we see all these things ourselves. Instead, we simply assume that the person we are talking to has the same view of the world as we do or has the same way of thinking as we do. And this would supposedly be pure coincidence?

We would save ourselves a lot of arguments and misunderstandings if, instead of making assumptions, we would ask beforehand what exactly someone else is referring to with his idea or proposal… We all carry our own upbringing, experiences, education and personal traits with us. We feel, interpret, think and act according to the way we perceive the world through our own glasses. And unfortunately we all wear a different model.

We communicate by telling stories

Why not look at what you want to convey as if it were a story? What I want to make clear to you is like a story: the facts that are experienced from my perspective, a version, and what you derive from this is your version of the story, which is based on your characteristics. You listen to me, but you understand me based on your own personal idiosyncrasies.

Or have you never noticed that the story you told to someone was passed on to someone else in a completely different way by this person? Everyone emphasizes the parts that are most important to them based on their experiences. That is why we are all responsible for spreading our own story.

When we say that someone else is wrong, we really mean that they think differently than we do. However? Think about it…
